The Lockport Township High School Band Program involves over 200 students in three 10th-12th grade Concert Ensembles, and two 9th grade Concert Ensembles. Considerable emphasis is placed on individual student progress and achievement. Each year, multiple band members are selected for the Illinois Music Educators Association District Honor Band and Orchestra, All-State Band and Orchestra, Music For All National Honor Band, and various Chicagoland youth orchestras.
Concert ensembles meet daily and perform a minimum of four formal concerts along with several festivals per year. Weekly private lessons are offered to all students in the program during the day from professional musicians, while also working with some of the nation’s most prominent clinicians and guest conductors. Over the years, the ensembles have earned consistent Superior Division Ratings at the State Organization Contest, performed in multiple recognized world-class concert halls, performed at both the Music Educator’s National Conference and Illinois Music Educator’s Conference, the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles International Conference, recipient of the John Philip Sousa Foundation Sudler Flag, been selected for the University of Illinois Superstate Band Festival nineteen times, and the Music For All National Concert Band Festival six times.
In 2009, The John Phillip Sousa Foundation awarded the Sudler Flag of Honor to The Lockport Band Program for its high standards of excellence in concert activities over a period of several years. The award is sponsored by Louis and Virginia Sudler, who were (and whose family continues to be) huge supporters of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and is administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. The John Philip Sousa Foundation received a nomination and a portfolio representing the total band program for the last seven years. Only 60 programs world-wide have been granted this award since 1983, and when received, Lockport was only the fourth program in Illinois to receive the honor.
